about this painting:
AUTUMN FOG 3
The mysticism of dying nature
Autumn is the period of transition from the joyous and impetuous life of summer to the silent death of winter. Leaves are touched by some sort of disease that deprives them of their healthy green color. They burn with yellow-red fever and long to fall to the ground and lie there until winter comes to cover them with snow. And yet this season is truly bewitching, every year the exquisite baroque of the color chaos encourages an artist to create a landscape. But Leonid Afremov thinks that cityscapes are also worth painting when autumn comes, and this admirable piece of art is an excellent depiction of the autumn city.
Path to the uncertainty
The painting begins with young green leaves, and this is the first thing you meet coming into the world of this work. But your second step makes the leaves yellow and red, and the farther you go, the less leaves you see on the trees. One more step - and the trees are absolutely bare, with leaves lying motionless on the path. And now there are just two colors in front of you: black and white, the black trunks of the trees steeped in slumber and the white fog of the uncertainty embracing them. And then you reach the figures of two men standing irresolutely in the middle of the path, since no eye can overcome the Scotch mist and nobody knows what is there, where the last tree disappears. The path is a path of a man whose youth is long gone and whose future has neither green leaves nor flowers but has the comprehension of life and its laws that helps him to appreciate the time of withering.
When is a cityscape inevitable?
- If you dislike people and animals being depicted on canvas and pictures of countryside tire you, it is time to pay your attention to other genres of painting. A skilfully painted cityscape should please your aesthetical feelings.
- If you live in a country, it is useless to have a landscape painting at home, it is better just to go for a walk in order to admire the nature. A well-painted cityscape is what you need to bring to your house then – something that cannot be found outside.
There is no need to say that this canvas by Leonid Afremov is a gorgeous example of cityscape!
