ROMEO AND JULIET

Who doesn’t know the story of Romeo and Juliet? These two young people proved that their love is stronger than family feud. They wanted to be together despite the fact that their parents hated each  other. And they would rather die than live apart. This is probably one of the most famous examples of pure and true love in history. Just in case you forgot the details, we’ll remind you how it was.

Shakespeare’s masterpiece

-    In the city of Verona there lived two families - the Montague and the Capulet. They’ve been at war for many generations.

-    At the ball, their children, Romeo and Juliet, fall in love with each other. They are intended to marry each other even though Juliet is supposed to be wed with another.

-    Meanwhile, Romeo’s friend Mercutio who is also a relative of the Prince challenges Juliet’s cousin Tybalt to a duel and is fatally wounded. Enraged, Romeo kills Tybalt and has now to be executed.

-    Juliet’s family insists on her wedding with another of the Prince’s relative, Paris. They don’t accept her refusal.

-    Wishing to marry Romeo secretly, Juliet devises a plan together with a local priest. He gives her a potion that is supposed to put her to sleep for twenty four hours so that everyone thinks she is dead. Then he is about to send a messenger to Romeo telling him to go to the crypt and find her there.

-    However, everything goes awry. The messenger fails to inform Romeo on the scheme and he thinks Juliet really dies. He kills Paris and comes to the tomb to drink a mortal potion and rejoin his beloved one in death.

-    Eventually, Juliet wakes up and finds her fiancé breathless. Grief-stricken, she stabs herself and the feuding families find both dead. Shocked by this brutal outcome, the Montague and the Capulet reconcile to honor the memory of their children.

A dance of confession

Although the ending of the story is quite grim, Leonid Afremov used it as an inspiration for one of his paintings.
