Always together, always apart

The paradox of the big city is that most of the time we find ourselves surrounded by dozens of people yet we are still on our own. They come into our lives every second and go leaving just a faint trace that will soon wear off. Try to remember any of the faces you saw in the street today. Who was that sad lonely woman on the bench? Were those tears on her face? Why was she crying? And that busy man that bumped into you on the traffic light – where was he heading in such a hurry? All of the people we meet on our way are more than just strangers that don’t make any difference. There is a history behind each of them. And Leonid Afremov likes telling those in his paintings. Art here becomes a key to human thoughts and emotions. After all, a man is the trickiest of all riddles. Shall we try and solve this one?

A fateful moment

This lovely cityscape shows us one of a thousand encounters that must have happened on this very spot. Nothing special, just two couples facing each other on a park alley. But how romantic and intense this casual meeting is!

·         The lovers are surrounded by a swirl of colorful raindrops and lantern lights. They seem to be walking down a path paved with sparks.

·         There is no one else in the alley; these two couples are the only ones to have ventured outside in the pouring rain. The weather may be outrageous, but they are cuddled warm and cozy in a loving embrace, locked inside a circle drawn by their umbrellas.

·         They keep approaching, two bright domes each protecting a small happiness, and suddenly random by-passers who were totally unrelated only a second ago see the reflection of their own love mirrored on the wet asphalt and in the eyes of each other.
