Sea and its secrets

Since the dawn of time, human eyes and hearts have been attracted to the mesmerizing surface of the sea. Always unchanging yet never the same, the rhythmical movement of waves pull us like a magnet. We can watch this panorama for hours, lost in its aquamarine brilliance. Trying to capture the elusive beauty of the open sea in all its forms and moods, artists create magnificent paintings that can dazzle us with the palette of ocean sunrises and sundowns, make us feel the soft touch of the noon tide or throw us into the middle of a furious storm. No matter what weather inspires you, a nice seascape will never be out of place in your interior!

Depictions of seas, rivers and vessels can be traced back to Ancient Egypt and Greece, with the earliest examples even found in primeval rock carvings. At that time, though, sea motifs were included as part of bigger scenes showing important historical events and performed a narrative rather than aesthetical function. Emergence of seascape as a distinct painting genre only occurred around the 15th century when Western navigators began actively exploring marine expanses surrounding their continent. Paintings with sea views and ships were particularly widespread in the Dutch tradition.

The genre flourished during the Romantic period in art. ‘Ship portraits’ that were predominantly painted before gave way to coastal sceneries and glimpses of the open sea. You could have already seen beautiful marinas by Ivan Aivazovsky, Antoine Roux, Caspar David Friedrich and Gustave Courbet. These great painters were spending hours on the seashore detailing every shade and line of their incredible seascapes that come to life so vividly before our eyes.

However, a new era of painting was already looming on the horizon with an even richer range of means to gaze into the haunting depth of the ocean. Claude Monet and his “Impression, Sunrise” sprinkled the monotonous sea surface with vibrant splashes of orange, green and violet opening a way for a new kind of art now known as Impressionism. Leonid Afremov is a prominent representative of this tradition in modern days. His seascapes, filled with bright hues and sparkling lights, will put you in a calm, romantic mood and give you a minute to fly away on the wings of your dreams to a secret shore where troubles vanish in placid waves and breathtakingly colorful sky embraces you with its pure infinity…

Magical time of the day

When the day is nearing its end and the sun is about to go down, the world is filled with soft golden glow of a special kind that can be seen only before sunset. Magical and wise, it seems to reveal the hidden meaning of things if you look closely enough. In a while, the horizon will ignite with heavy shades of red that will change everything back, but for now you can just admire the beauty of this wonderful hour. On his large canvas paintings, Leonid Afremov tries to capture precious moments of life in their passing charm and striking delicacy. This gentle and emotional seascape takes us to unknown shores basking in sunlight and peace somewhere in the vastness of the Indian Ocean.

The union of golden and blue

The very first thing we notice in this picture is the amount of gold spilled in the sky over a serene-looking lagoon. Casting a broad glade on the calm water surface, the glowing blur of the sun gives everything a particularly dreamy look. The gracious silhouettes of the sailing boatsare trapped right in the middle of this overpowering shine, their tall masts rising distinctly against the amber-colored background. The gentle blue of the lagoon echoes the deep blue of the sky already touched by a bit of pink over the mist-covered mountains looming in the distance. Altogether, it fills the scene with profound beauty that can leave us breathless even though it is just a picture.
